Lisbon - Portugal

Valverde is an eye-catching recent addition to the Lisbon hotel scene, a charming townhouse-style retreat on one of the city’s most elegant 19th century boulevards.

The beautiful interiors combine contemporary furnishings with a timeless aesthetic, emphasising the hotel’s period features. Dining at the restaurant is always a treat, and the courtyard swimming pool is an unexpected bonus for such an intimate boutique hotel.

The top floor suites enjoy particularly impressive views over the rooftops of this famously hilly city, while down at ground level you’re in a great location for the trendy nightlife of the Bairro Alto and the upscale boutiques of Chiado and Avenida de Liberdade.

Nearby Attractions

Valverde is situated on the Avenida de Liberdade, a broad, tree-lined boulevard where you’ll find many of the city’s top designer boutiques. You’re just a 10-minute walk from Rossio Square and the Baixa district, Lisbon’s commercial heart.

The vibrant nightlife of the Bairro Alto is also right on your doorstep, though it’s a steep climb if you decide to get there on foot. Quiet during the day, this buzzing neighbourhood comes to life after dark, and the leafy Praça do Príncipe Real is the centre of the city’s LGBT scene.

On the other side of Rossio sits the 11th century hilltop Castelo de São Jorge and the atmospheric streets of the Alfama, the old Moorish heart of Lisbon. Must-do day-trips include Belém, home to some of the best custard tarts in the city, and the surreal palaces of Sintra, 40 minutes by train from Rossio station.

Valverde’s 25 stylishly appointed rooms and suites are compact but extremely comfortable, with the most spacious suites located on the top floor. All rooms have an LCD satellite TV, WiFi, mini bar and safe, and some also have a small balcony.

The Pateo is an open air courtyard with a swimming pool where you can cool off and enjoy cocktails, afternoon tea and an all-day menu of light bites and Portuguese classics. There is also a reading room and a lounge that hosts occasional film screenings. The hotel concierge can assist with booking tours or arranging a personal shopper, and in-room massages are available.

The atmospheric Sítio restaurant focuses on Portuguese cuisine, with regular entertainment including local fado musicians twice a week, and a fabulous Sunday brunch accompanied by live jazz.

The Seven Hills of Lisbon

Lisbon is an exceptionally hilly city, which is great if you’re looking to combine your sightseeing with a bit of a workout, but can be a bit of a struggle in the height of summer. Luckily the locals have come up with some ingenious ways of dealing with the steep inclines, including the iconic number 28 tram, the Gloria funicular railway and the beautiful Elevador de Santa Justa, a unique contraption that has been transporting passengers between the lower and upper town for over a hundred years.

A funicular railway run by Carris. It conects pombaline downtown to Bairrio Alto.
