The Maremma region is a taste of the real Tuscany. Shop for local produce in the local village, Sassofortino, or head to the Thursday morning market in Grosseto, a 30-minute drive away.
The ancient seaside town of Castiglione della Pescaia is one of the most picturesque on the Maremma coast, and the surrounding beaches have some of the clearest water in Italy. Other local attractions include the unspoilt Parco della Maremma and the Lago dell’Accesa, a picturesque volcanic lake.
The Tuscan treasures of Siena, Pisa and Florence all make for relatively easy day trips from Valdonica, and the region is scattered with remnants of the ancient Etruscan civilisation. It’s also possible to visit Rome for the day, though the drive will take you the best part of 3 hours each way.
The guest rooms are either housed in the Cantina building, where the wine is made, or within the traditional farmhouse-style villa, and all rooms have a lovely private patio. The beds are hand-crafted from 400-year-old wine barrels, and in-room amenities include satellite TV, mini bar and tea/coffee making facilities.
The design blends traditional Tuscan architecture with the latest in stylish, energy-efficient design, and complimentary WiFi is available in the Forum and the Villa. Guests have access to a communal kitchen, and cooking classes are available if you want to learn some local recipes. Breakfast is served outside during summer and in the Cantina on colder days, showcasing food from local producers. The Forum’s Lounge is Valdonica’s social hub, where cooking, dining and wine tasting take place around a huge wooden table made from medieval wine barrels
There is a lovely pool amongst the vineyards, plus a hiking trail that winds its way through forests and fields, with romantic picnic spots along the way. Valdonica’s wellness offering includes yoga, Pilates, Ayurvedic massage and reflexology, and the many excellent wines can be enjoyed out on the Degustation Terrace, with wonderful views of the Tuscan hills and the Mediterranean Sea.

The Valdonica Story
Dr. Martin Kerres maintains he did not find Valdonica but that Valdonica found him. His love for the country, region and area shines through in many ways, from the wines produced to the continuously growing number of repeat guests!
The team at Valdonica work with the greatest respect, gratefulness and joy for the nature that surrounds them and this is reflected in the organic certification of their wines. We love their laid-back, positive attitude to life and think that you will too!
One of the highlights of your stay is the Valdonica Dinner, a four-course celebration of local cuisine that takes place in the wine cellar every week or so, accompanied by a selection of wines produced on site. There are also some excellent restaurants within walking distance, and the team at Valdonica can prepare a picnic for you if you want to head out into the hills to enjoy the beautiful scenery.
How to get here...
You can fly direct from various UK airports to Pisa, Florence or Rome, with carriers including British Airways, easyJet and Jet2. Flight time is 2 hours 15 minutes to Pisa or Florence, and 2½ hours to Rome.
Valdonica is located in the Maremma region of southern Tuscany, 2 hours’ drive from Florence or Pisa and 2½ hours from Rome. We recommend hiring a car to explore this beautiful and unspoilt region. Free parking is available at Valdonica.
