The Thompson enjoys an enviable location in the upmarket Gold Coast district, a short distance from the shores of Lake Michigan and the chic boutiques of Oak Street and the Magnificent Mile.
This area is a shopaholic’s dream, filled with both independent stores and luxury outlets, and there are also plenty of top end restaurants and trendy bars. The nearest L Train station is about a 10-minute walk, and nearby cultural attractions include the Museum of Contemporary Art and the Art Institute of Chicago.
It’s a 10-minute drive to the East Lakeview neighbourhood of Boystown, known for its lively LGBT nightlife, and 20 minutes to the more laid back scene in Andersonville. You’re also close to the Willis Tower (formerly the Sears Tower), the second tallest building in North America.
Floor-to-ceiling windows flood the 247 rooms and suites with natural light, and it’s worth paying the extra for a view over Lake Michigan. Décor is bright and contemporary, and all rooms have a flatscreen TV, WiFi, mini bar and safe.
The suites also have an iPod dock, and some have a soaking tub and an outdoor terrace. For the ultimate in urban luxury, opt for one of the split-level, loft-style Penthouses.
The Thompson’s Italian fine dining restaurant, Nico Osteria, is popular with both hotel guests and Chicago natives, serving a delectable selection of seafood and pasta. Salone Nico is an intimate and laid back wine bar and cocktail lounge, perfect for both pre- and post-dinner drinks, and private dining is available. If you overdo it on the pasta, the hotel also has a well-equipped fitness centre!
