The Saint John

Valletta - Malta

Summary

The Saint John is a highly rated boutique hotel at the historic heart of Valletta, providing the perfect base for exploring Malta’s UNESCO-listed capital.

Housed within a handsome 17th century building just steps from the famous Co-Cathedral of Saint John, this funky urban retreat combines industrial-style décor with smart technology. It’s a beguiling blend of old and new, typical of a city that’s gearing up for a stint as European Capital of Culture in 2018.

We love the quirky, playful style and the attentive staff, with a warm welcome extended to LGBT travellers, and the location is unbeatable if you’re looking to sample the culture, cuisine and nightlife of this exciting city.

The Knights of St John

The history of Valletta is bound up with the crusading Knights of St John, a Catholic military order that established itself in Malta in the 16th century. Valletta was built as a fortress to defend Christendom against the advance of the Ottoman Turks, and the beautiful baroque streets were designed on the grid system that you can still see today. The Order of St John ruled Malta for almost 270 years, but was eventually expelled from the island by Napoleon Bonaparte in 1798.

A small capital of the Mediteranean island of Malta.
