East meets West at this quirky boutique hotel in the heart of London, a former Victorian grammar school that has been reimagined as an Indian-themed urban sanctuary.
Behind the 19th century red brick façade lies a vibrant and modern hotel where the staff wear traditional Indian dress, and the assembly hall is now a fine dining restaurant serving cuisine from around the subcontinent. Even the hotel’s afternoon tea evokes distant shores, served with an aromatic pot of chai.
It’s easy to forget that you’re in London, so make sure you get out and explore! The South Bank location is fantastic, just steps from Tower Bridge and Borough Market, and the vibe is welcoming and inclusive, ideal for LGBT travellers.

The LaLiT is on Tooley Street, just a couple of minutes’ walk from Tower Bridge. The surrounding area has been completely revitalised over the last decade, and is home to major attractions such as The Shard, Tate Modern and Shakespeare’s Globe Theatre.
A Saturday trip to Borough Market is a must for foodies, and there’s always something going on along the South Bank during summer. The views across the Thames towards St Paul’s Cathedral and the skyscrapers of the City are spectacular, best appreciated from one of the characterful pubs that line the river.
The nearest Tube station is London Bridge, with great connections to all corners of the city. Hop on the Jubilee Line for the boutiques of Bond Street, the O2 Arena or the Olympic Park; the Northern Line will take you to Soho and the theatres of the West End, or east to trendy Shoreditch and Old Street.
Many of the 70 rooms and suites used to be classrooms, and they’re all slightly different in their layout and Indian-infused décor. All rooms have an LED TV, free WiFi, Nespresso machine and Kronocare bath amenities.
The lovely spa, Rejuve, draws on both eastern and western therapies and traditions, and there is also a gym.
Enjoy a cocktail in a sophisticated setting at the Teacher’s Room, or sample fine cognacs and Champagne in the Headmaster’s Room. The Baluchi restaurant enjoys a stunning setting in the Grade II listed assembly hall, with a fabulous fine dining menu that takes inspiration from India’s many distinctive regional cuisines. The wonderfully named Naanery is a gourmet bakery where you can enjoy the best naan you’ve ever tasted, and The Gallery serves a unique Indian-themed afternoon tea. There is also an appealing outdoor terrace where you can dine al fresco if the weather allows.

The LaLiT’s main restaurant, Baluchi, is the stunning centrepiece of the hotel, occupying what was once the assembly hall of St Olave’s grammar school. The menu is inspired by cuisine from around India, featuring dishes from regions including Kerala, Kashmir and Bengal, making use of high quality British ingredients such as Romney Marsh lamb and Gloucestershire pork belly. The food is fantastic and the setting is spectacular, with chandeliers suspended from the vaulted ceiling and a rich colour palette of deep blues and dark woods.
