- Superb restaurant serving fresh locally-source ingredients

The Lagos Mare Hotel is in the pretty seaside village of Agios Prokopios, and it’s a 7-minute walk down to the gorgeous golden sand beach, where you’ll find various restaurants and eateries.
The island’s capital, Naxos Town (also known as Chora), is a 10-minute drive away, and there is a frequent bus service from just outside the hotel. This atmospheric little town has a lovely waterfront area and a maze of narrow alleyways that lead up to the historic hilltop Kastro district, where you’ll find handsome Venetian mansions and the ruined fortress of Sanoudos.
Other beaches within walking distance include Stelida to the north, and Agia Anna and Plaka to the south. You could also head out on a sailing trip and explore nearby Koufonisia, a little-known trio of islands with a low key charm that offer a stark contrast to more developed islands such as Mykonos.
With just 30 rooms and suites, this is a genuinely boutique hotel. The décor is fresh and bright, and many rooms enjoy dazzling sea views. In-room amenities include an LCD TV, free WiFi, Nespresso machine, mini bar and safe, and all rooms have a private balcony or veranda. Some also have an indoor Jacuzzi and upgraded entertainment facilities.
During the day you can chill by the pool or head down to the beach, a short walk from the hotel. There is also a fitness centre, sauna and wellness centre offering massages, beauty treatments, reiki and aromatherapy. Personal training is also available, with activities including yoga and Pilates on offer, and numerous watersports are possible down on the beach.
The superb 1924 Restaurant presents authentic local flavours with a contemporary flair, making use of meticulously sourced ingredients including fresh seafood straight from the family fishing boat. A splendid Greek buffet breakfast is served daily by the pool, and the Eastern Star Bar is the place for a sunset cocktail or aperitif. The hotel also offers island gastronomy tours, wine tasting workshops and cookery classes.

A Family Affair
In 1924 Giannis Lagos sailed from Smyrna to Naxos in his boat the Eastern Star, part of the exodus of ethnic Greeks from Anatolia following the Greco-Turkish War of 1919-22. The Lagos Mare Hotel was opened in 2006 by Giannis’s globetrotting grandson Stylianos, known locally to everyone as Mr Stelios, and the family’s story is honoured in the names of the 1924 Restaurant and the Eastern Star Bar. You can really sense the pride that Mr Stelios and his team take in the way they run the hotel, with a homely and intimate atmosphere that makes every guest feel like part of the family.
