Hotel Unique

Sao Paulo - Brazil

Rub shoulders with São Paulo’s movers and shakers at the aptly named Hotel Unique, one of the city’s most distinctive buildings.

The unusual curved design resembles a ship, an effect that’s only amplified by the porthole-like windows. The stunning rooftop bar is popular with both tourists and well-heeled locals, with unbeatable views of South America’s biggest city.

The hotel is situated in the upmarket Jardins district, which is also where you’ll find the city’s best gay nightlife, and it’s a firm favourite with LGBT travellers.

Nearby Attractions

Hotel Unique is a 5-minute walk from Ibirapuera Park, central São Paulo’s biggest green space, and the surrounding neighbourhood of Jardins is full of great restaurants, bars and designer boutiques. Most of the city’s best gay clubs are also located in this area.

Cultural attractions include the excellent Museum of Modern Art, modelled on its namesake in New York City, and the fascinating Afro-Brazil Museum, where you can learn about Brazil’s African culture and heritage.

The city’s busy main thoroughfare, Avenida Paulista, is about a 15-minute taxi ride from the hotel. Here you’ll find shopping malls, museums and galleries, and it’s a great spot for people watching.

Hotel Unique’s 94 rooms and suites are quirky and contemporary, with features such as circular windows and wooden floors that curve upwards and become walls. In-room gadgetry includes an LED TV, WiFi and Nespresso machine, along with a safe and mini bar. The sumptuous suites, named after the world’s most famous streets, also have Apple TV, and the top dollar Oasis Suite opens onto a private sundeck with a Jacuzzi.

The undoubted star of the show is the striking red-tiled rooftop pool, with its underwater sound system and spectacular views of the São Paulo skyline. Up here is where you’ll find the Skye Restaurant and Bar, which serves a mixture of Italian, French, Brazilian and Japanese cuisine to reflect the city’s multicultural heritage.

There is also a small spa and a fitness centre overlooking the indoor pool, which you can plunge into via the handy waterslide! The lobby bar is another eye-catching space, where the spirits are lined up on a 60-foot high wall.

A Design Hotel

Hotel Unique is one of the most striking hotel buildings we’ve ever seen, with its unusual half-moon shape and circular windows that resemble portholes. Renowned Brazilian-Japanese architectect Ruy Ohtake is the man responsible, influenced by the likes of Oscar Niemeyer and Frank Gehry, and his cutting-edge design is one of the many reasons why this was declared South America’s best hotel by Condé Nast Traveler in 2016.
