Hotel Skeppsholmen Stockholm Sweden's scenic city view from room window

Hotel Skeppsholmen

Stockholm - Sweden

Summary

Hotel Skeppsholmen is an island of calm in the heart of Stockholm - quite literally!

Originally constructed as a barracks in the 17th century, this stylish boutique retreat is the only hotel on Skeppsholmen Island, a green and peaceful haven just minutes from the city centre. The historic façades conceal a typically Scandi interior, with a beautifully realised minimalist aesthetic and a neutral colour palette of soft and soothing tones.

The hotel is a popular choice with the LGBT community, and the waterfront location is perfect for exploring the highlights of Stockholm, within easy walking distance of the city’s many museums, designer boutiques and the picturesque streets of the Gamla Stan.

Nearby Attractions

The hotel is a 5-minute walk from the Modern Art Museum and the Museum of Far Eastern Antiquities, both of which are also on Skeppsholmen Island.

A footbridge takes you into the city centre, and it’s about a 20-minute walk from the hotel to the Gamla Stan, Stockholm’s picturesque medieval old town. Here you’ll find the magnificent Kungliga Slotten, home to the Swedish royals since 1754, along with the fascinating Nobel Museum, which charts the history of the Nobel Prize.

Other highlights include the quirky ABBA Museum, a celebration of Sweden’s most famous musical export. Stockholm is also great for shopping, from vintage curios to designer fashion and Scandi furniture. There is no gay quarter as such, but Stockholm is a very LGBT-friendly city, with the best bars and clubs situated in the Gamla Stan and Södermalm neighbourhoods.

Description

Hotel Skeppsholmen’s distinctive yellow buildings house 81 rooms, some of which are quite compact due to the historic nature of the site. Interiors are understated and contemporary, and all rooms have a TV, free WiFi, mini bar, safe and bathroom amenities by Swedish brand Byredo. The spacious Officer’s Suite also has a free-standing bathtub.

The hotel is surrounded by lovely gardens where you can sit out on the terrace, weather permitting, and the waters of the harbour are safe to swim in. Complimentary garden yoga sessions take place every Saturday, in partnership with gym wear specialists lululemon. The tennis court was the first ever outdoor court in Sweden, built by King Oscar II back in 1882, and there is also a gym at the hotel.

Restaurant Långa Raden is open to both hotel guests and discerning local diners, serving a delightful menu of contemporary Swedish cuisine using seasonal ingredients. Breakfast, lunch and dinner is served here, along with an amazing à la carte brunch. You can also enjoy al fresco dining from the garden menu, with a selection of sandwiches and light bites on offer.

History of Skeppsholmen

Known locally as ‘The Long Row’, the 17th century buildings that now house Hotel Skeppsholmen were originally meant to house King Karl XII’s Royal Marines, constructed using stone from abandoned castles out in the countryside. The soldiers never actually moved in, and the barracks were subsequently used to house poor people infected with the plague. Later it became a naval storehouse, and is now a listed historic monument, as well as a stylish boutique hotel!
