Just minutes from the buzzing town of Playa del Carmen, the resort enjoys a fantastic setting amongst mangroves, dazzling white sand and verdant jungle. Accommodation is divided into three distinctive areas, including an adults-only sanctuary where couples are guaranteed a bit of peace and quiet.
Grand Velas offers a huge amount of choice, with eight restaurants, bars galore and a plethora of watersports and activities. You’re also in a great location for exploring the natural and archaeological wonders of the Yucatán Peninsula, away from the more boisterous nightlife of Cancún.

- Luxury all-inclusive resort
- Built amongst mangroves and set on a dazzling stretch of white sand beach
- Three distinctive accommodation areas including an adults-only sanctuary
- Eight excellent restaurant concepts
- Extensive choice of watersports and land-based activities
- Short distance from the buzzing town of Playa del Carmen
Grand Velas is just a short drive from the centre of Playa del Carmen and Quinta Avenida (5th Avenue), where you’ll find the town’s best shops and liveliest bars. There aren’t many venues specifically aimed at the LGBT crowd, but the nightlife scene is friendly and you’ll feel very welcome at mixed venues.
Just off the coast is the world’s second longest barrier reef, and a 45-minute ferry ride will take you to the largely undeveloped island of Cozumel, a snorkeller’s paradise. Back on the mainland it’s just a 10-minute drive to Xcaret eco-park, where you can swim with dolphins, explore underground rivers and learn more about Mayan culture.
Top archaeological sites to tick off include Tulum, around 50 minutes from the resort, and the magnificent Chichén Itzá, which is well worth the 2 to 3-hour drive. Cancún is about an hour away, with a very different vibe to chilled out Playa del Carmen.
There are a total of 539 suites at Grand Velas, divided into three distinct areas: the Grand Class section is for over-16s only, the Ambassador accommodation is aimed at families, and the Zen Grand suites enjoy a more natural setting amongst jungle foliage and pretty fish ponds. All suites have a private terrace, plasma TV, WiFi, Nespresso machine and whirlpool tub, and many also come with a private plunge pool.
Each area of the resort has its own gorgeous infinity pool, and active pursuits on offer include sailing, kayaking, snorkelling, scuba diving, horse riding, beach volleyball, zumba and yoga. There is also an excellent spa with 40 treatment suites, a well-equipped fitness centre, a kids’ club for 4-12 years and a teens’ club for 13-18 years.
Treat your tastebuds with eight different restaurant concepts, including gourmet Mexican, traditional French and mouthwatering pan-Asian. There are plenty of places to find a drink, including a piano bar, several swim-up pool bars and the wonderful rooftop Sky Bar.
