Nearby Attractions

The huge advantage of staying at the Belmond is that you can visit the falls out of hours, before the national park opens to the general public. Get up early and you’ll have the walking trails pretty much to yourself, with no queueing and no one getting in the way of your photos.

Try and visit both sides of the falls if you have time; the Brazilian side is best for panoramic views, while the trails on the Argentinian side are more extensive and take you right into the heart of the falls.

The hotel can arrange activities including speedboat rides, white water rafting and even helicopter charters for a truly unique perspective on the falls. The surrounding rainforest is also rich in wildlife, including coatis, howler monkeys and brightly coloured parrots.

Description

The hotel comprises 193 rooms and suites, blending Portuguese colonial style with a splash of tropical colour. In-room amenities include an LCD TV, WiFi and mini bar, and the spacious Cataratas Suites also have a separate living area and private balconies.

You can relax by the large outdoor pool, heated during the winter months, and there is a smaller kids’ pool nearby. Other facilities include a fitness centre, tennis court and the excellent Cataratas Spa, which includes steam rooms and a couple’s treatment suite.

There are two restaurants: the Ipê Grill is a classic Brazilian barbecue joint, while Itaipu serves a mixture of local and international dishes with a lovely outdoor verandah. The colonial-style Bar Tarobá is the place to enjoy a zingy caipirinha, with a resident band playing Brazilian tunes in the evening.

The Big Water

The name Iguassu (also spelled Iguazu or Iguaçu) means ‘Big Water’ in the indigenous Tupi and Guarani languages, though you’ll soon realise that this description is something of an understatement. The sheer scale of Iguassu Falls is breathtaking, with some 300 separate waterfalls stretching for nearly 3 kilometres along the border between Brazil and Argentina.
