The Hôtel Bel Ami is a chic and contemporary retreat located in the heart of Saint-Germain-des-Prés, a characterful neighbourhood steeped in literary heritage.
Jean-Paul Sartre and his fellow existentialists used to hold court in the local cafés, and the hotel is housed in a former print works where the first draft of Guy de Maupassant’s novel ‘Bel Ami’ was published.
The location is perfect for soaking up the bohemian vibe of the Rive Gauche and exploring the sights of central Paris, and you’re also within walking distance of the vibrant LGBT nightlife of Le Marais.
Two people sharing a room for 3 nights, departing in November 2018. Contact us for your specific requirements. From price for guidance only, all subject to availability.
- Located in the neighbourhood of Saint-Germain-des-Prés
- Fun and modern rooms
- Fantastic luxury base from which to explore the city
- Comfy hotel bar with bookshelves to peruse for literary inspiration
- Local area full of fabulous restaurants and brasseries
Saint-Germain-des-Prés was the centre of the post-war existentialist movement, when artists and intellectuals would gather in local cafés such as Les Deux Magots and the Café de Flore.
The neighbourhood is still full of cosy cafés and restaurants, though these days the Rive Gauche is also known for its designer shopping, with boutiques showcasing brands including Louis Vuitton, Ralph Lauren and Emporio Armani.
The hotel is also close to the Jardin du Luxembourg, the Louvre and Notre-Dame cathedral, and it’s about half an hour’s walk to Le Marais, the epicentre of the city’s vibrant LGBT scene.
There are 108 rooms and suites, with a fun and modern aesthetic that’s in stark contrast to the usual frilly Parisian style. Every room has a flatscreen TV, iPod dock, free WiFi, mini bar and safe, and some rooms also have a Nespresso machine.
The hotel is designed as a base for exploration rather than a destination in itself, so facilities are limited, although there is a gym and a spa with two treatment rooms, sauna and relaxation room.
Make yourself at home in one of the comfy armchairs at the Bel Ami Bar, where you can work your way through the inventive cocktail list or peruse the bookshelves for some literary inspiration. The hotel restaurant, Les Mots Passants, is open for breakfast during the week, and does a tasty organic brunch at the weekend. Sartre’s old haunts, Les Deux Magots and Café de Flore, are both still going strong. Other recommended local eateries include the stylish Ze Kitchen Galerie and the Vagenende brasserie.

Saint-Germain-des-Prés is one of the most atmospheric neighbourhoods in Paris, and the roll call of previous residents reads like a ‘who’s who’ of European art and literature: Picasso, Renoir, Monet, Camus and Sartre all spent time in this characterful corner of the capital. The cobbled lanes, flower markets and cafés have a timeless appeal, even if there are some who grumble that gentrification is forcing out the modern day Picassos as the designer brands move in.
