The Gayxample

Axel Hotel is situated in a corner of the Eixample known as the Gayxample (also spelled Gaixample) on account of the many LGBT-friendly bars, restaurants and clubs. The distinctive grid pattern of the streets in this part of town dates back to the 19th century, when Barcelona expanded out rapidly from its medieval core. As well as great nightlife you’ll also see some magnificent modernist architecture around this neighbourhood, including Antoni Gaudí’s undulating Casa Milà (also known as La Pedrera) and the fairytale turrets of the Casa de les Punxes, designed by Josep Puig i Cadafalch.
