Arthur Hotel

Jerusalem - Israel

Summary

The Arthur Hotel is a friendly little boutique hotel in the heart of downtown Jerusalem, with a quirky colonial style inspired by the days of the British Mandate.

Rooms are compact but beautifully decorated, with plush Turkish rugs and vintage photographs that evoke the Jerusalem of old. The hotel garners rave reviews for its wonderful staff and personal service, and it’s a popular choice for LGBT travellers.

The central location is perfect for exploring both modern Jerusalem and the historic centre, and the hotel offers excellent value compared to the better-known chain hotels that overlook the Old City.

Nearby Attractions

The Arthur Hotel is located just off Ben Yehuda Street, a pedestrian mall popular with both locals and tourists, lined by souvenir shops, restaurants and cafés.

It’s a 10-minute walk to the Old City, the spiritual heart of Jerusalem, where you’ll find the Dome of the Rock, the Western Wall and the Church of the Holy Sepulchre. Regardless of your own beliefs, it’s hard not to be struck by the history and religious significance of this city, holy to three different faiths.

Other must-see attractions include the fascinating Israel Museum, the Mahane Yehuda Market and Yad Vashem, a powerful memorial to the victims of the Holocaust.

Description

The Arthur Hotel has just 58 rooms, smartly decorated and kitted out with a flatscreen TV, WiFi, safe, fridge and tea/coffee making facilities.

There are echoes of old Jerusalem in design touches such as the Armenian plates and vintage photos on the walls, and some rooms also have a wrought iron balcony.

The restaurant is open for breakfast, laying on a fantastic buffet, and there is also a late afternoon ‘happy hour’ when drinks, sandwiches and snacks are available.

Arthur who...?

Hotel Arthur is named after Lord Balfour, British Prime Minister from 1902 to 1905 and later Foreign Secretary. He is best remembered for the 1917 Balfour Declaration, in which the British government announced its formal support for the creation of a Jewish homeland in Palestine. The role of the British in the history of modern Israel is reflected in the colonial décor of the hotel, which harks back to the time of the British Mandate.
