Andaz London hotel's regal building exterior on Liverpool Street

Andaz London Liverpool Street

London - United Kingdom

Summary

Square Mile style meets East London cool at this one-of-a-kind hotel, which occupies a beautiful Grade II-listed Victorian building next to Liverpool Street station.

The Andaz was formerly the Great Eastern Hotel, which first opened its doors in 1884. Many of the original features have been retained, with marble staircases and mosaic floors complemented by more contemporary pieces by Shoreditch street artists.

The smart and stylish rooms have recently been refurbished, and there’s a great choice of dining venues, including a superb Japanese restaurant and a traditional English pub. The location is perfect for sampling the delights of trendy East London, and excellent transport links connect you with the West End and beyond.

Nearby Attractions

The Andaz is in a prime location in the City of London, and the area’s many pubs and flash restaurants bustle with bankers during the week. You’re also just steps from the very different vibe of Shoreditch, which remains an eclectic and creative quarter full of galleries, bars and trendy eateries, in spite of the rising tide of gentrification.

St Paul’s Cathedral, the Barbican Centre and the Tower of London are all within a 20-minute walk, and popular nearby shopping spots include Old Spitalfields Market, Boxpark and One New Change. A trip to Brick Lane for a curry is another East London must-do.

Other highlights of the East End include Columbia Road Flower Market, the Whitechapel Gallery and the mouthwatering Saturday food stalls at Hackney’s Broadway Market. You’re also fairly close to the Olympic Park, and it’s a 10-minute hop on the Tube to the restaurants, bars and theatres of the West End.

Description

The many faces of the local area are reflected in the decor of the 267 rooms and suites: the carpets recall the pinstriped suits of City bankers, while illustrations by local artists add a dash of Shoreditch cool. In-room amenities include Apple TV, WiFi, Nespresso machine and a mini bar replenished daily with complimentary non-alcoholic drinks and snacks.

The Health Club includes a steam room and fitness centre, and in-room spa treatments are also available. There are numerous meeting rooms and event spaces, including a spectacular Masonic temple said to have been frequented by Jack the Ripper.

Dining options include Miyako for authentic Japanese cuisine, the traditional English pub fare of Lady Abercorn’s, and the Eastway brasserie, which does a great bottomless brunch at the weekend. The stunning 1901 Restaurant, formerly the hotel ballroom, is open for breakfast, while the 1901 Wine Lounge serves afternoon tea, drinks, small plates and cheese boards sourced from Old Spitalfields Market. There is also a late night lounge bar with a resident DJ on Friday nights.

The Masonic Temple

One intriguing and utterly unique feature of the Andaz is the Grade II-listed Greek Masonic Temple, a spectacular space hewn from 12 different types of Italian marble. The temple was hidden behind a fake wall for many years, and since being rediscovered it has been used for everything from wedding receptions to a Vogue photoshoot with Lady Gaga. The temple hosts regular events, product launches and pop-ups, and can be hired out for parties and private dining.
