Ace Hotel Downtown

Los Angeles - USA

Summary

Hip hotel chain Ace have given the old United Artists Building a typically trendy makeover, turning a handsome 1920s film studio into one of the hottest tickets in downtown Los Angeles.

The striking Gothic exterior was inspired by Barcelona’s Sagrada Família cathedral, but inside you’ll find a stripped back industrial aesthetic and a relaxed, youthful vibe. The South Broadway location drops you in one of LA’s most exciting neighbourhoods, ideal for urban explorers who love being in the heart of the action.

The roof terrace is the hotel’s social hub, a great place to kick off a night on the tiles, and there’s also an excellent restaurant and a beautifully restored 1920s theatre. Ace have a loyal LGBT fanbase, perhaps unsurprisingly as the company was founded by three gay friends, and their hotels always attract a diverse and open-minded crowd.

Description

An industrial vibe defines the 182 rooms and suites, with exposed ceilings and minimalist décor. All rooms have a flatscreen TV, WiFi, mini bar and custom Revo radio, and some open onto a private terrace or include quirky features like an acoustic guitar or a vinyl record player.

Up on the sunny rooftop there’s a small pool and bar, inspired by legendary Hollywood nightclub Les Deux Café, where you can drink in the fantastic city views and meet new friends at the regular events, parties and pop-ups. The fantastic Theatre is a painstakingly restored 1,600-seater movie palace, hosting occasional concerts and premieres. Other facilities include a 24-hour gym, retro photobooth and bicycle hire.

The Best Girl restaurant takes its name from the first film ever screened at the Theatre, and offers a bistro-style ambience under the expert guidance of chef Michael Cimarusti. Up above the restaurant is the Mezzanine, a communal dining space that’s great for events and special celebrations, and there’s also a coffee counter just by the lobby.

The Other Broadway

The Ace Hotel is in the heart of LA’s old Broadway theatre district, and the lavish 1920s movie hall is one of the hotel’s most visually arresting features. The Theatre was originally built for the United Artists film studio, founded by Mary Pickford, Douglas Fairbanks, D.W. Griffith and Charlie Chaplin with the aim of breaking free from the creative constraints of the Hollywood establishment. The Theatre was reopened in 2014 by Ace Hotels, and remains true to the independent spirit of its founders.

Enjoy LA's old Broadway theatre district.
